Putting Your Child's Best FOOt forward.

I used to hear old granny said "never let babies wear shoes when their feet are not ready". Nowadays everyone seem to be talking about healthy feet especially for kids and shoes play a very important role to provide the right comfort & support to ensure proper arch support for your kids'feet.

Thus, it's really important to measure a child's feet accurately before buying them every pair of shoes.
Be it a prewalker boy or girl's baby shoes

or your baby's 1st walking shoes:

That's because ill-fitting shoes can have a serious impact on your child's foot health for years to come.

To be sure that your child is wearing shoes that fit properly, we should find retailer who have trained staff to measure and fit your child with shoes, or if that's not convenient, use one of their specially developed tools to help you to measure your child's feet at home.

Take a look at this useful video to learn the important things to look for when fitting your daughters buckle up school shoes. Here you will find very informative guide on how to check if your kids' shoe is suitable and well fitted for your child's delicate feet. You can learn to be your own expert in checking your kids' feet and their shoes fitting.

Laughter Yoga/ Laughter Therapy

Have you heard of Laughter Yoga or Laughter Therapy?

Laughter Yoga (Hasyayoga) is a form of yoga employing self-triggered laughter. The "laughter" is physical in nature, and does not necessarily involve humor or comedy. The concept was developed by Indian guru Jiten Kohi.[citation needed] It was made popular as an exercise routine developed by Indian physician Dr. Madan Kataria.[citation needed] Kataria writes about the practice in his book Laugh For No Reason.

Method

Laughter is simulated in a group with eye staring, frivolity, petting, and deep diaphragm breathing[clarification needed] developing into real and contagious laughter. It is meant to be a combination of laughing and yoga breathing, in order to bring more oxygen to the body and the brain.[clarification needed] Laughter yoga is based on the assumption that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter, and that their physiological and psychological benefits are thus identical.[citation needed]

In the early stages of laughter yoga's popularity,[when?] early morning groups, especially the older men, practiced group laughter in open parks. In recent times, a more formalized version was created and popularized as "Laughter clubs".

Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor from Mumbai, India popularly known as the ‘Guru of Giggling’ (London Times), is the founder of Laughter Yoga Clubs movement started in 1995. While researching the benefits of laughter, he was amazed by the number of studies showing profound physiological and psychological benefits of laughter. He decided to find a way to deliver these benefits to his patients and other people. The result is Laughter Yoga, a unique exercise routine that combines group laughter exercises with yoga breathing which allows anyone to laugh without using jokes, humor or comedies. Kataria's first Laughter Yoga club was started on 13 March 1995 in Mumbai. It began with just 5 people in a local public park, but the concept rapidly spread worldwide and as of 2009 there are more than 6000 laughter parties in 60 countries.

Spreading rapidly in USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, South East Asia, China and Africa, this new concept has been widely covered by prestigious publications like the TIME magazine, National Geographic, and the Wall Street Journal and featured on CNN, BBC, US networks and the Oprah Winfrey Show.

KIWI juice - for dengue fever

Something to share from an email I received from a friend. Strictly for leisure reading only. The believe is in the eyes of the reader & please feel free to dig up evidence from google search engine. Read & practise at your own risk.

the email goes like this:
… "My husband and I just recover from dengue…….my husband symptom is a bit different from me……husband dengue symptom….high fever, shivering, nausea, rashes, body pain… while my symptom …high fever, vomit, shivering, body pain and bad rashes…… the biggest different is my pallet did not drastically drop but my husband pallet drop until 18 and doc do platlet transfusion……all advise from fren & family I try to help increase my husband platlet…..crab soup and etc but its not work (maybe not suitable for him) until one day one of nurses told us to drink kiwi juice….since both of us admitted …difficult for us to get kiwi juice…luckily during dinner time…the hospital serve kiwi juice for my husband and slice of kiwi fruit for me…..the next day….my hubby platlet increase to 82 and my platlet increase from 150 to 169….and the doc allow us to discharged…..

actually I’m not really well…the next 2 days I do blood test again and my platlet drop again to 141……the doc quite surprise and told me if I still feel weak, she want me to admit again…..my husband bought for me kiwi juice and force me to drink….luckily after 2 days my platlet increase to 300….

Another fresh story…my husband’s aunty also infected with dengue fever….her platlet drop to 76….i bought for her kiwi juice and the next day ..her platlet increase to 170…..and doc allow her to discharge….

The reason of this email is to share the miracle of KIWI juice ……pls share this email with friends who have being infected with dengue fever…..especially kids……. "

To me, I personally feel that no harm in drinking Kiwi which is soooo rich in Vit C. Vitamin C is definitely helpful to boost your immune system especially when you have dengue or any illnesses which cmpromise your immune system. Agree?

For those of you who are sceptical, just take this info with a pinch of salt!

Happy weekend everyone!

PaPaYa

Received this email from a friend and would like to share it and benefit all my readers.

Papaya

Who doesnt know what is a papaya? I'm sure everyone knows.

Papaya was the only studied food found to halt breast cancer

Scientists studied 14 plant foods commonly consumed in Mexico to determine their ability to halt breast cancer cell growth. These included avocado, black sapote, fuava, mango, prickly pear cactus (nopal), pineapple, grapes, tomato, and papaya. They also evaluated beta-carotene, total plant phenolics, and gallic acid contents and antioxidant capacity. They found that only papaya had a significant effect on stopping breast cancer cell growth. (International Journal of Food Science and Nutrition, May)

Papaya is a store-house of cancer fighting lycopene

The intense orangey-pink color of papaya means it is chock full of cancer fighting carotenoids. Not only beta carotene, but lycopene is found in abundance. The construction of lycopene makes it highly reactive toward oxygen and free radicals.

Scientists at the University of Illinois think this anti-oxidant activity contributes to its effectiveness as a cancer fighting agent. Epidemiological studies have indicated an inverse relationship between lycopene intake and prostate cancer risk. They showed that oral lycopene is highly bioavailable, accumulates in prostate tissue, and is localized in the nucleus of prostate epithelial cells.

In addition to antioxidant activity, other experiments have indicated that lycopene induces cancer cell death, anti-metastatic activity, and the up-regulation of protective enzymes. Phase I and II studies have established the safety of lycopene supplementation. (Cancer Letter, October 8, 2008)

Prostate cancer was the subject of a study in Australia that looked at 130 prostate cancer patients and 274 hospitalized controls. The scientists found that men who consumed the most lycopene-rich fruits and vegetables such as papaya were 82% less likely to have prostate cancer. In this study, green tea also exerted a powerful anti-cancer effect. When lycopene-rich foods were consumed with green tea, the combination was even more effective, an outcome the researchers credited to their synergy. (Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2007)

Isothiocyanates found in papaya restore the cell cycle to eliminate cancer

Organo-sulfur compounds called isothiocyanates are found in papaya. In animal experiments, isothiocyanates protected against cancers of the breast, lung, colon pancreas, and prostate, as well as leukemia, and they have the potential to prevent cancer in humans. Isothiocyanates have shown themselves capable of inhibiting both the formation and development of cancer cells through multiple pathways and mechanisms. (International Journal of Oncology), October, 2008)

Researchers in Japan clarified the mechanisms of action in a type of isothiocyanate found in papaya known as BITC, that underlies the relationship between cell cycle regulation and appropriate cell death. When cancerouscells die on schedule, they are no longer a problem. The researchers established that BITC exerted cancer cell killing effects that were greater in the proliferating cells than in the quiescent cells. Cancer cells that are proliferating are much more dangerous than cancer cells that are in a state of dormancy. (Forum of Nutrition, 2009)

Enzymes from papaya digest proteins including those that protect tumors

The fruit and other parts of the papaya tree, also known as the paw paw tree, contain papain and chymopapain, powerful proteolytic enzymes that facilitate chemical reactions in the body. They promote digestion by helping to break down proteins from food into amino acids that can be recombined to produce protein useable by humans. Proteolytic enzymes protect the body from inflammation and help heal burns. They do a good job of digesting unwanted scar tissue both on the skin and under its surface.

Research has shown that the physical and mental health of people is highly dependent on their ability to produce proteins they can use effectively. However, as people age, they produce less of the enzymes needed to effectively digest proteins from food and free needed amino acids. They are left with excessive amounts of undigested protein which can lead to overgrowth of unwanted bacteria in the intestinal tract, and a lack of available amino acids.

Eating papaya after a meal promotes digestion, and helps prevent bloating, gas production, and indigestion. It is quite helpful after antibiotic use to replenish friendly intestinal bacteria that were the casualties in the war against the unwanted bacteria. When the intestinal tract is well populated with friendly bacteria, the immune system is strengthened, and can better protect against flu and cancer.

Being a proteolytic enzyme, papain is able to destroy intestinal parasites, which are composed mostly of protein. To rid the body of intestinal parasites, half a cup of papaya juice can be alternated each hour for twelve consecutive hours with the same amount of cucumber or green bean juice.

Papaya contains fibrin, another useful compound not readily found in the plant kingdom. Fibrin reduces the risk of blood clots and improves the quality of blood cells, optimizing the ability of blood to flow through the circulatory system. Fibrin is also important in preventing strokes. Proteolytic enzymes containing fibrin are a good idea for long plane rides to minimize the potential of blood clots in the legs. People who sit at a desk all day might want to use proteolytic enzymes too.

Proteolytic enzymes are able to digest and destroy the defense shields of viruses, tumors, allergens, yeasts, and various forms of fungus. Once the shield is destroyed, tumors and invading organisms are extremely vulnerable and easily taken care of by the immune system.

Undigested proteins can penetrate the gut and wind up in the bloodstream where they are treated by the immune system as invaders. If too many undigested proteins are floating around, the immune system becomes overburdened and unable to attend to the other tasks it was meant to do. Proteolytic enzymes can digest these rogue proteins, freeing up the immune system.

Let's ensure a slice of papaya every day in our diet. Papaya juice will be great too!

p.s I've also heard of evidence that papaya leave made into i teaspoon of bitter juice helps to raise platelets in haemorrhagic dengue. Have not tried it personally. Any comments on this? Could anyone share the scientific evidence references please?

Merdeka Outing (2)- Visit to the World's Largest Buddha Relics & Tibetan Antiques Cultural Exhibition

Thks to uncle Asokan who informed me about this great exhibition.

Have you ever seen Buddha's blood, flesh & bone relics? here they are:

This is God of Prosperity (some may call him Choy Sun Yeh):

The kids also had their chance to bathe the Little Buddha & got blessings from the Tibetan Monks who sprinkled holy rice over us & gave us sweets & candies.

It was indeed a very interesting, eye opening & knowledgeable event both for us as parents as well as for my 4 kids. The best thing is admission to this great exhibition is FREE!As today is the last day of the exhibition, we were told that the organiser will fly back all the relics & antiques back to their places of origin like Taiwan & Singapore, etc.

Time to check expiry dates !

Yup, I was going through my canned food & provision stuff in the cupboard & also the toiletries and found soooo many expired & going to expire stuff in 2009. That could be because ever since my "betrayor" maid ran away, I dont really spend much time cooking on weekdays like she did & she has been asking me to buy a lot of redundunt stuff without really checking if they are still available. Since she left I found myself saving so much more & less credit card bills to pay!

Aftr clearing all the expired ones, suddenly I found my cupboard so spacious & yippeee that means got chance to go for retail therapy to store new ones for the New Year. However, not planning to spend like I used to, due to economy slow down.

One of my New Year resolutions (besides to be more patient, spend more time with my kids & do more charity) is to be more thrifty to face the inflation crisis ahead.

So have you check your cupboards and see if you can beat me to the number of expired goods found? And what's your new year resolutions?

I've collected My 1st Prize...iPOD Shuffle

The Senior Operations Manager Mr.Wong & another manager Alex were there to present the prize ...1 unit iPOD shuffle & 2 cartons (24 X 2 cans) of RC Cola for me to enjoy with my family & friends.

This is the close up pic of the Ipod..very small & compact ideal for jogging/ shopping.

Though not as expensive as the one I won last time but it's the joy of winning that counts.

I've also learnt something from the managers aboput their other product KICKAPOO.

Take a look at this picture.

Do you knw which one is genuine and which one is "pirated" ?

The original (genuine) KICKAPOO has a green cap, with the words (Tanpa Kafein) Caffein free & also the Chinese characters read "KIT kar poh" and not "KAT Kar poh" in mandarin. Sorry I dont know Mandarin but at least I can see the difference in the chinese characters here.
The fake one is taller and has a Yellow cap without the kICKapoo logo on the cap. Others exactly the same ..dats why many consumers cant differentiate them.

So those of you KICKAPOO lovers like me out there make sure you look for the genuine ones when you purchase the next time. The original one is of course priced higher than the fake one but the taste is more genuine , too. I've been a KICKAPOO lover since childhood. It has been around even before I was born. BTW, I'm not paid to do this post OK, just trying to help do justice to the KICKAPOO company who is sueing the company who faked their product.

For your info, KICKAPOO also has a product called VIMTO..something like RIBENA. Tried before? What are you waiting for..go grab your original KICKAPOO, RC Cola & VIMTO and enjoy while you blog!

Thnks again KICKAPOO for the chance to win in your contest.

Parenting skill: Dealing with Kids' Tantrums

After my blog posting on this subject previously, I went searching in the net for some extra solutions here.

Here's what I found:
Avoiding Tantrums Altogether
The best way to deal with temper tantrums is to avoid them in the first place, whenever possible. Here are some strategies that may help:

Make sure your child isn't acting up simply because he or she isn't getting enough attention. To a child, negative attention (a parent's response to a tantrum) is better than no attention at all. Try to establish a habit of catching your child being good ("time in"), which means rewarding your little one with attention for positive behavior.
Try to give toddlers some control over little things. This may fulfill the need for independence and ward off tantrums. Offer minor choices such as "Do you want orange juice or apple juice?" or "Do you want to brush your teeth before or after taking a bath?" This way, you aren't asking "Do you want to brush your teeth now?" — which inevitably will be answered "no."
Keep off-limits objects out of sight and out of reach to make struggles less likely to develop over them. Obviously, this isn't always possible, especially outside of the home where the environment can't be controlled.
Distract your child. Take advantage of your little one's short attention span by offering a replacement for the coveted object or beginning a new activity to replace the frustrating or forbidden one. Or simply change the environment. Take your toddler outside or inside or move to a different room.
Set the stage for success when kids are playing or trying to master a new task. Offer age-appropriate toys and games. Also, start with something simple before moving on to more challenging tasks.
Consider the request carefully when your child wants something. Is it outrageous? Maybe it isn't. Choose your battles; accommodate when you can.
Know your child's limits. If you know your toddler is tired, it's not the best time to go grocery shopping or try to squeeze in one more errand.
If a safety issue is involved and a toddler repeats the forbidden behavior after being told to stop, use a time-out or hold the child firmly for several minutes. Be consistent. Kids must understand that you are inflexible on safety issues.

Tantrum Tactics
The most important thing to keep in mind when you're faced with a child in the throes of a tantrum, no matter what the cause, is simple and crucial: Keep cool. Don't complicate the problem with your own frustration. Kids can sense when parents are becoming frustrated. This can just make their frustration worse, and you may have a more exaggerated tantrum on your hands. Instead, take deep breaths and try to think clearly.

Your child relies on you to be the example. Hitting and spanking don't help; physical tactics send the message that using force and physical punishment is OK. Instead, have enough self-control for both of you.

First, try to understand what's going on. Tantrums should be handled differently depending on the cause. Try to understand where your child is coming from. For example, if your little one has just had a great disappointment, you may need to provide comfort.

It's a different situation when the tantrum stems from a child's being refused something. Toddlers have fairly rudimentary reasoning skills, so you aren't likely to get far with explanations. Ignoring the outburst is one way to handle it — if the tantrum poses no threat to your child or others. Continue your activities, paying no attention to your child but remaining within sight. Don't leave your little one alone, though, otherwise he or she may feel abandoned on top of all of the other uncontrollable emotions.

Kids who are in danger of hurting themselves or others during a tantrum should be taken to a quiet, safe place to calm down. This also applies to tantrums in public places.

Older kids are more likely to use tantrums to get their way if they've learned that this behavior works. Once kids are school age, it's appropriate to send them to their rooms to cool off. Rather than setting a specific time limit, parents can tell them to stay in the room until they've has regained control. The former option is empowering — kids can affect the outcome by their own actions, thereby gaining a sense of control that was lost during the tantrum.

After the Storm
Occasionally a child will have a hard time stopping a tantrum. In these cases, it might help to say to say, "I'll help you settle down now."

But do not reward your child after a tantrum by giving in. This will only prove to your little one that the tantrum was effective. Instead, verbally praise a child for regaining control.

Also, kids may be especially vulnerable after a tantrum when they know they've been less than adorable. Now is the time for a hug and reassurance that your child is loved, no matter what.

I'm not alone..facing kids' nonsense in public!

As I was blog hopping to About your child's blog, I feel that I'm not alone in facing kids' nonsense in public. So glad there are so many comments which came in after my previous blog on the issue What happens when your Kid shows tantrums in public?.

I can trully feel what the mommy was going through and must compliment her for handling it without her BIG MAN around to help her. When I first became mom to my twin boys, I was very conscious of what public will think and how they will look at me if I dont give in to my twins. But now having the 4th one..things have changed.Especially after I met an Australian friend who practice parenting skill from books she read. She thought me not to give in to kids no matter how young u consider them to be. So since then whenever my kids throw tantrums and bully or test my patients in public with their NONSENSE, I don't give a damn what others think of me..I just do what is right. Afterall it's me who gonna suffer the consequences for giving in to the kids not the onlookers. It's my kids not theirs. Sooner or later I believe with more educated parents, public will support my reaction of walking away if my kids don't listen to me in public.

What happens when your kid shows tantrums in public?

Last night, daddy had a Chinese wedding dinner to attend in Taiping. Again being a family man, he always asks us whether we would like to go along. Mommy being the thrifty one (and some more on unpay leave)declined to attend the wedding dinner with him. This is to cut cost of having to pay double the amount for the wedding ANG POW gift.
(BTW, what's the ang pow rate nowadays per person when you attend a Chinese wedding dinner?)

Instead mommy agreed for all the 4 kids to tag along to Taiping Tesco to have dinner and shopping while waiting for daddy to finish his dinner at Taiping Lake Gardens. At Tesco, we all had bread and doughnuts instead of the usual rice and dishes for a change. It's easier for mommy to pack and go and let us eat as we shop in Tesco supermarket. The two little princesses were in the trolley while both the twin kor kor walked along with mommy.

When we arrived at the Yakults sample booth, all of us took a sample each. As we were moving away from the booth, Princess Juliana (4 yrs) insisted that mommy buy VITAGEN. Mommy hesitated because it would be a few hours more before we reach Ipoh and the drinks need to be refrigerated. After some whinning, mommy gave in and ask Juliana to go get the VITAGEN herself at the low shelf. She refused and continued to whine and started her tantrums. Then 2nd twin Dennis kor kor (9yrs) went and took a batch of 6 bottles VITAGEN for Juliana. Then guess what...Juliana refused to accept the VITAGEN and said she wanted Yakults vitagen. I guess to her VITAGEN means the cultured drink just like to us we all call the diapers as PAMPERS(due to it's famous brand name).

This time mommy began to loose her patience and warned her that if she continued to whine, mommy would walk away and leave her in the trolley. Meanwhile, mommy has secretly asked the kor kors to go change VITAGEN to YAKULTS for the fussy pot.

As mommy turned around, the kor kor and princess Jasmine (3yrs) (who had come down from trolley to follow the twins) were all out of sight. Mommy went to the cultured drink corner..no sign of them. At the same time, Juliana was still crying and kicking away with her tantrums in the trolley. Out of panic and anger, mommy slapped Juliana on her cheek. She asked the VITAGEN auntie whether she saw the trios, she said none. The panic and worry lasted a while until mommy saw the twins and Jasmine again, still holding the VITAGEN in their hands. They lost their way when trying to find the cultured drinks corner.

When mommy was very firm with Juliana and warned her that she will leave her alone and walk away, another shopper auntie saw the drama and told her own little daughter who was about Juliana's age that "may be she should do the same to her if she behaves like that next time". Mommy was so glad at least she has got one supporter instead of having the rest of the on lookers staring at her as if she was so mean to ignore and not trying to give in to that rascal's tantrums.

The reason mommy acted that way is because a friend from Australia has the same encounter and has shared with mommy the secret of tackling such situation from a Book she read.If mommy had given in one time to Juliana, the next time she would probably do the same and get away with what she wanted.

After the whole predicament, Juliana finally quiet down and tried to seek comfort in Dennis kor kor who played the good guy when mommy was the Bad one. Later mommy hugged Juliana and explained that she should not do that again. When asked to apologise to mommy, surprisingly Juliana humbly apologised and promised she wont show tantrums in supermarket again or else mommy will just leave her and walk off.

Mommy's friend's kid actually rolled on the supermarket floor showing tantrums during her encounter and mommy's friend just left her alone and walked off. Shortly after that she came back to her and picked her up and went home straight..teaching her a lesson that in future if that happens again, the whole family can't continue doing what they were doing (that was shopping and having family time) if she repeats showing tantrums in public again.

FoooH!!!Really a stressful and nerve cracking incident at the supermarket when I had to handle 4 of them without my hubby around.

Have you experience the same scenario of your kids showing tantrums in public? How did you handle the situation? You gave in or you showed that you are in control?

Attention all sanitary pad users

Received this email from a friend and I thought no harm sharing. Whether you believe or not...I leave it to you.

Use pad for more than 3 hours can cause cervical cancer & bacteria infection.
FOR THOSE OF US WHO USE SANITARY NAPKINS/PADS:

IF u ever wondered what were the ingredients that made popular brands so
'free! and light and carefree', well here's the bit:

The material that makes the pad so paper THIN, is cellulose gel. YEap,
it's not even cotton!!!!!!

DO NOT wear the same pad for more than 3 hours of a maximum!!! After
this duration, the genital area is prone to bacterial action and may
result in cervical cancer or other complications!!!!!!!!!!

REMEMBER! NEVER NEVER NEVER WEAR THE SAME PAD FOR MORE THAN 3 HOURS!!!!

SO yes, please pass on this message to as many women as possible and
save lives!!!!!!!!!!

If you are a woman and use pads, but especially if you use tampons, read
this and pass it on to your friends. For the men receiving this email,
please forward it to your friends, significant others, wife, sisters, mothers,
daughters, etc.) Thanks!

Check the labels of the sanitary pads or tampons that you are going to
buy the next time and see whether you spot any of the familiar signs
stated in this email.

No wonder so many women in the world suffer from cervical cancer and
womb tumors. Have you heard that tampon makers include asbestos in
tampons? Why would they do this?

Because asbestos makes you bleed more, if you bleed more, you're going
to need to use more. Why isn't this against the law since asbestos is so
dangerous? Because the powers that be, in all their wisdom (not), did
not consider tampons as being ingested, and, therefore, didn't consider
them illegal or dangerous.
This month's Essence magazine has small article about this and they
mention two manufacturers of a cotton tampon alternative. The companies
are: Organic Essentials @1-800) 765-6491 and Terra Femme @(800)755-0212.

A woman getting her Ph.D. at University of Colorado at Boulder sent the
following: 'I am writing this because women are not being informed about
the dangers of something most of us use: tampons. I am taking a class
this month and I have been learning a lot about biology and women,
including much about feminine hygiene. Recently we have learned that
tampons are actually dangerous (for other reasons than TSS). I'll tell
you this - after learning about this in our class, most of the females
wound up feeling angry and upset with the tampon industry, and I for
one, am going to do something about it To start, I want to inform
everyone I can, and email is the fastest way that I know how

HERE ! IS THE SCOOP:
Tampons contain two things that are potentially harmf ul: Rayon (for
absorbency), and dioxin (a chemical used in bleaching the products). The
tampon industry is convinced that we, as women, need bleached white
products in order to view the product as pure and clean. The problem
here is that the dioxin, which is produced in this bleaching process,
can lead to very harmful problems for a woman. Dioxin is potentially
carcinogenic cancer-associated)and is toxic to the immune and
reproductive systems. It has also been linked to endometriosis and lower
sperm counts for men. For both sexes, it breaks down the immune system.

Last September, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that
there really is no set 'acceptable' level of exposure to dioxin given
that it is cumulative and slow to disintegrate. The real danger comes
from repeated contact Karen Couppert 'Pulling the Plug on the Tampon
Industry'). I'd say using about 4-5 tampons a day, five days a month,
for 38 menstruating years is 'repeated contact', wouldn't y! ou? Rayon
contributes to the danger of tampons and dioxin because it is a highly
absorbent substance. Therefore, when fibers from the tampons are left
behind in the vagina (as usually occurs), it creates a breeding ground
for the dioxin. It also stays in a lot longer than it would with just
cotton tampons. This is also the reason why TSS (toxic shock syndrome)
occurs.

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?

Using feminine hygiene products that aren't bleached and that are all
cotton. Other feminine hygiene products
(pads/napkins) contain dioxin as well, but they are not nearly as
dangerous since they are not in direct contact with the vagina. The
pads/napkins need to stop being bleached, but, obviously, tampons are
the most dangerous.

So, what can you do if you can't give up using tampons? Use tampons that
are made from 100% cotton, and that are UNBLEACHED. Unfortunately, there
are very few compani! es that make these safe tampons. They are usually
only found in health food stores.

Countries all over the world (Sweden, Germany, British Columbia, etc.)
have demanded a switch to this safer tampon, while the U.S. has decided
to keep us in the dark about it. In 1989, activists in England mounted a
campaign against chlorine bleaching. Six weeks and 50,000 letters later,
the makers of sanitary products switched to oxygen bleaching (one of the
green methods available) (MS magazine, May/June 1995).

WHAT TO DO NOW:
Tell people. Everyone. Inform them. We are being manipulated by this
industry and the government, let's do something about it! Please write
to the companies: Tampax(Tambrands), Playtex, O.B., Kotex. Call the 800
numbers listed on the boxes. Let them know that we demand a safe product
ALL COTTON UNBLEACHED TAMPONS.

AND FOR THOSE OF US WHO USE SANITARY NAPKINS/PADS:
